    Some of my favorite places:

The Four Corners, Southwestern USA.  Ever been there?  It is ancient, sun burnt red, desolate.  But if you hike around their you'll probably find some awesome little nooks and crannies with sage brush, ancient Anasazi cliff dwellings, and green cottonwood trees pointing the way to water.  Coyotes will sing you to sleep at night, and lone mountain lion tracks will keep your senses sharp.

Ithaca, New York, USA.  Yup, Ithaca is Gorges!  Icebergs shaped the landscape there long long ago, and now locals and visitors can walk from one side of town to the other by way of a winding stone path running along the Cascadilla Gorge.  Waterfalls are abundant within and without the town limits.  Flourishing small farms surrounding the town provide some good eating all year round.  And maybe best of all, Ithaca has ABC Cafe, run by Ken and an ever-changing staff of creative cooks and servers.  The locals seem to have a culture and pride all their own.  This was my last long term hometown before moving to Charlottesville, and it's where my boy, Jakob was born...but I'm not just being biased...it's worth checking out!

Shenandoah National Park, USA.  It's hard to admit that I actually spent more time in the park before I lived this close to it than since I've moved here.  I only just got a car recently, and it's tricky to get there otherwise.  But, this is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been.  And I heard something pretty interesting recently,   that the Appalachian Mountains are actually much older than all of the big mountains out west.  In it's prime, the Appalachian range had peaks that would have dwarfed many of the big ones elsewhere today.  They've shrunk in their old age, but have also developed a complex and abundant ecosystem of plants and wildlife that attract visitors from all over.

Some of my favorite MusicOkay may not be able to give specific album names every time but, my first favorite album (early teens) was Combat Rock by The Clash.  I also liked D.C. bands around that time (because that's where I lived and these are the bands that had cheap shows) like Fugazi (and Minor Threat), Bikini Kill, Unwound (meet the label).  Then, in my mid-teens came Bob Marley and the Wailers, the Grateful Dead, and you can probably guess the rest if you were  into the same stuff.  Now, well Hank Roberts, from Ithaca, NY, blows me away on his cello so I've started getting lessons to learn how to play it too. And how come I never knew that Dolly Parton rocks until a few months ago?  Modest Mouse is a big one, and they just keep on making records.  Cat Power. Ani DiFranco.  Jan Smith is my and my three-year-old's favorite local singer-songwriter.   Sarah White and the Pearl's are up there too.

Some Favorite Books:   Point Counter Point, Aldous Huxley.  Mists of Avalon, Marion Zimmer Bradley.Red Tent, ?.  Mermaids Singing, ?.  Spiritual Midwifery, Ina May Gaskin (non-fiction).

Some Favorite CausesFree food;  Legalize Midwifery! (learn more) ; Sustainable development;  Labor rights;  Strict environmental regulations (I know it might step on some hard-working people's toes, but who knows if we'll even have toes to step on if we don't watch our step?).  Organic farming.  Alternative transportation (how about bikes?).  Save the amoebas!
